Frequently Asked Questions
What should I feed my new puppy/kitten?
Puppies and Kittens should stay with their mum until they are at least 5 to 6 weeks old. Mum will give them all the food they need in milk. If mum cannot feed the puppies for a medical reason then it should be substituted with puppy/kitten milk (available at the clinic). We do not advise feeding normal milk as this can cause stomach upsets.
Once your puppy/kitten is weaned from mum it can go straight onto solid foods. We recommend feeding wet dog/cat food mashed into a paste-consistency at first until they are used to eating solids. Then they can eat normal dry food. A bowl of water should always be available.
Avoid any bones or toxic food like onions, garlic, chocolate etc.
What age should I de-sex my pet?
Dogs and cats can be de-sexed from 4 months onwards.
How often should I bathe my animal?
It IS possible to over-wash your pet. Cats generally keep themselves clean and so it isn’t necessary to wash them unless they are exceptionally dirty.
Dogs shouldn’t be washed with shampoo any more often than once a month. It can strip their coat of natural oils and can cause skin irritations and infections. Always use a dog shampoo, or baby shampoo if dog shampoo is not available.
If your dog gets dirty and isn’t due a wash yet, you can rinse the dirt off with water only.
What age should I vaccinate my pet?
Both dogs and cats should receive their first vaccine at 6-8 weeks old, then another vaccine 4 weeks later. As Samoa has a high incidence of infectious diseases we advise a third vaccine at about 16 weeks of age to ensure they have full protection.
Adult dogs should receive a vaccine every 1-3 years depending on their risks.
When I should I bring my pet into the clinic for the first time?
Puppies and Kittens should first be wormed at 2 weeks old. We generally recommend that you bring every new pet to the clinic for a check up when you get them.
How often should I treat my pet for fleas and worms?
Puppies and Kittens should be treated for worms every 2-4 weeks until they are a couple of months old.
After this we advise dogs and cats are treated monthly for fleas/ticks and worms.
How do I stop my dogs fighting?
The best way to stop dogs fighting is to de-sex them. This applies for both males and females.
How do I stop my pets running away or getting lost?
Once dogs are de-sexed they are more likely to stay around the house and not wander off looking for fights and mates. It’s a good idea that all dogs wear a collar and at APS we can engrave a tag with your phone number.
